Exterior refrigerated skating rinks are rare in the province of Quebec

This outdoor refrigerated skating rink in Montreal blends into Mount Royal’s pastoral decor, preserving and highlighting the historic and natural landscape of the mountain with wavy, modernist lines that conceal a high-tech feat of engineering. The implementation of significant infrastructure underground required a careful reworking of the terrain in keeping with the clearing designed by Olmsted. The curves of the rink, the area in front of the adjacent pavilion and the sinuous pathways create a gracious ensemble that opens onto Beaver Lake and captures its spirit.
