Dominion Bridge | Master Plan
Lemay’s visionary master plan for the redevelopment of the former Dominion Bridge industrial site aims to reclaim precious waterfront property for a vibrant, mixed-use development that will revive the sector. Following the remediation of heavily contaminated soils, a neighbourhood of 1,900 dwellings, 12,000 m2 of commercial space and 25,000 m2 of recreational and public space will gravitate around a central park, intertwined with courtyards, terraces, playgrounds, access to transit, recreation and community services and walkable, play-friendly streets.
The proposal reflects new thinking about cities and anticipates LEED ND status. Its immense scale and complexity necessitated an integrated design process that brought together multiple professionals.
Dominion Bridge Company manufactured steel structures for skyscrapers and bridges for over 100 years. A triangle motif runs throughout the plan recalling roof trusses and building fragments; the site’s signature material is Corten steel. This unifying element is used for benches, tree grates and sculpture, while commemorating generations of steel industry workers.
A web of public spaces showcases the site’s industrial past, opening up the water’s edge to pedestrian and bike networks. The proposed urban grid reinforces and refreshes the surrounding buildings, enhancing the community’s quality of life.
