The Centre Lise et Yvon Lamarre was officially inaugurated, introducing a thoughtfully designed space that redefines how architecture supports neurodivergent individuals. This residence and day centre, designed specifically for adults on the autism spectrum (ASD), represents a step forward in neuro-inclusive architecture—a field that integrates neuroscience, psychology, and design to create environments that support cognitive and sensory needs.

The project is a space that prioritizes stability, autonomy, and well-being through sensory-aware design. Every element, from soft transitions between spaces to natural materials that minimize overstimulation, was carefully considered to foster a sense of security and clarity. The result is an environment that allows residents to engage with their surroundings at their own pace, balancing opportunities for interaction with quiet spaces for retreat.

Designing for neurodiversity

The Centre Lise et Yvon Lamarre is structured around a hierarchy of sensory experiences. Spaces transition from low-stimulation private areas to gradually more engaging common spaces, allowing residents to move comfortably between them. Architectural elements—such as muted colours, contrasting materials for wayfinding, and curved corners that soften transitions—help to create an environment that feels both intuitive and reassuring.

The outdoor spaces further extend the sensory experience, with aromatic gardens, water features, and textured pathways designed to provide both active and calming zones. These elements transform the landscape into a place of learning, exploration, and connection with nature.

A model for the future

The centre is not only a milestone for neuro-inclusive architecture but also a model for future residential, educational, and public spaces. By integrating sustainability, universal accessibility, and neurodiversity-centered design, this project sets a new precedent for how we shape the built environment.

The inauguration marks a significant achievement for everyone involved, from the Lamarre Foundation to the architects, designers, and specialists who worked to ensure that every detail serves the needs of its residents.
