Bold as the landscape

The Gaspésie Museum makes a bold statement in line with its breathtaking views of Gaspé Bay. One of eastern Quebec’s most prominent wooden structures, this regional landmark tells the story of a people steeped in maritime tradition. Lemay’s proposal for a multifunctional extension both complements and enhances the original structure.  The addition needed to be built on a narrow piece of sloping land, between the existing building and an external amphitheatre, without hindering the museum’s normal operations.

The project adds new exhibit rooms, technical areas, regional archives and a documentation centre as it maximizes natural light and views of the bay. Its architectural language evokes the power of the landscape and the area’s maritime memory.
