The playful and eco-friendly Parc Frédéric-Back was a winner at the 11th Grands Prix du Design!

Lemay and Morelli Designers happily accepted their Grand Prix in the Urban Furniture category for their unique design of biogas-capturing wells. Previously known as the Complexe environnemental de Saint-Michel (CESM), the metamorphosis of the former quarry and landfill is one of the most ambitious urban environmental rehabilitation projects in North America. In addition to designing a brand image for signage, furniture and lighting, the Lemay team met an uncommon challenge: the creation of protective casing for 250 biogas-capturing wells. In addition to overcoming multiple technical constraints (daily monitoring, spark-free operation, ventilation) these spherical casings adapt to soil movements, drawing visitor curiosity.

Made of fibre and phosphorescent glass, the spheres create a whimsical glow in the evening and welcome physical interaction. The creation of these unique casings and the environmental ingenuity of the City of Montreal recently allowed this sizeable new park to open to the public.

Congratulations to the team who contributed to this project!
