A playful space inspired by a unique artist
Set in the heart of the town of l’Assomption, Place Karl-Tremblay is a commemorative site designed in tribute to the singer who was the musical soul of the Cowboys fringants band for nearly 30 years In keeping with the personality of the artist who died in 2023 and the values he conveyed, the venue is intended to be humble, joyful, multi-generational and inclusive.
This urban space has already left its mark on the history of the neighborhood, hosting a spontaneous gathering in memory of Karl Tremblay the day after his death, an event that inspired the municipal administration to rename the square in honour of the musician whose personal history is closely linked to this city. The result is an expression of the many facets of this popular artist’s character.
Both engaging and open, the site invites the public to feel Karl Tremblay’s presence through visual cues that recall the man and artist he was. All the commemorative elements – whether it’s the tribute screen, symbols, projections or song lyrics – form a playful mosaic that highlights his life and the work of his band. Family, friendship, ties, video games, field hockey and nature are just some of the themes that inspired the designers. The site also pays homage to the world of Les Cowboys fringants – paper airplanes, shooting stars, the fleur de lys, etc. – and reflects the values of inclusion and respect for the environment that they express in their songs.
The various landscaping components include a low wall, a large turf bed, an urban esplanade, a fountain and a green oasis, as well as a renewed forecourt for the Hector-Charland Theatre, which borders the square on its eastern flank. On the other side of the park, a new pavilion houses dressing rooms, a multipurpose hall and public restrooms.
The public is invited to take part in the evolution of the tribute wall – on which Karl Tremblay’s tie hangs for posterity – by attaching their own ties to contribute to the changing face of this work over time. While celebrating Karl Tremblay’s cultural heritage and respecting his legendary humility, the place dedicated to him is based on a concept where art meets functionality to create an experience as unique as the famous singer himself.
