Development focused on residents’ health and well-being
This innovative project involves the development of a master plan, supported by sustainable strategies, to develop a mixed-use neighbourhood in Montreal’s Centre-Sud district, anchored by the iconic Maison Radio-Canada tower.
The program focuses on pedestrian and cycling connections, access to high-quality public spaces and modulated density to create an urban neighbourhood on a human scale. It also includes large areas set aside for sociocultural projects, including for the social economy, popular education and civic participation.
The proposed new urban grid includes public squares and parks, as well as shared paths and spaces, pedestrian crossings and green alleyways throughout.
Pedestrians and cyclists will have priority within the Quartier des lumières. The sector is being developed to promote active transportation and aims to limit vehicle speeds while limiting trucking activity to the periphery of the site. The objective is to create a safe and peaceful place that strengthens community confidence, social ties and civic participation.
These new public and semi-public spaces will also be conducive to the emergence of community life and neighbourhood vibrancy. The urban fabric will create a dynamic living environment with a density of residents and workers that supports the presence of local businesses.
The project also calls for the development of some 1,000 social and affordable housing units and office space, as well as a residential component for a diversified clientele that will include students, young couples and families, single people and retirees.
Finally, the Quartier des lumières has earned a three-star rating under Fitwel Community certification, a standard that the new neighbourhood has helped to define and that encourages development strategies that benefit health and well-being.
