Redefining commercial washrooms as welcoming art social spaces
In a world where a spectrum of individuals coexist, Royalmount’s inclusive bathrooms offer a space designed to foster a sense of security and privacy alongside a sense of whimsy for customers of this unique mall. This project demonstrates how utilitarian commercial spaces can be elevated through thoughtful architectural and artistic integration.
Before entering from the main mall corridor, a sensory digital art installation by Spanish artist Cristina Mejías draws attention by enveloping the space in a play of light and aquatic sound.
Inside, the eye naturally focuses on the centre of the space, where sinks are integrated into a spectacular central island, concealing equipment such as the hand dryers and waste bins to create a monolithic sculpture without visual interruption. A hint of sublime and a spark of whimsy characterize the small alcoves equipped with fragmented mirrors that serve as “touch-up” zones, discreetly separated from the spaces intended for family use and privacy.
In addition to the custom-designed monolithic central block, the space is defined by the mirrored ceiling and minimalist lighting that provide a lounge atmosphere, while a corridor of private stalls with stretched proportions and individual cabins provide personal comfort. All the functions of a commercial bathroom are brought together in the spirit of a communal gathering place: a welcoming space where everyone can take a moment to catch their breath, have a chat or simply take a break between activities.
