The design for the Montreal Irish Monument Memorial Site has received an Honorable Mention in the Conceptual: Public Space Design category at the 2026 World Landscape Architecture (WLA) Awards, placing the project among the most compelling public-space concepts recognized worldwide this year.
The project brings together remembrance and public life in a single gesture: a landscape that honours one of the city’s most significant historic sites while opening it to gathering, learning, and cultural exchange. At its heart stands the Black Rock, a silent witness for more than 160 years to the thousands of Irish immigrants who perished from typhus during the Great Famine migration. Around it, a new memorial park invites visitors to connect with this defining chapter of Montreal’s history, through a corten steel veil pierced by 6,000 Celtic crosses, one for each life lost.
Presented annually, the World Landscape Architecture Awards recognize excellence, sustainability and innovation in landscape architecture from around the globe.
