The LOOP Design Awards have announced their 2026 winners. Place des Montréalaises received the Design of the Year award in landscape design, in addition to winning in the Public Space category. The Montreal Irish Monument Memorial Site was also recognized, winning in the Landscape Architecture – Concept category.
This award holds special meaning for Place des Montréalaises. In 2022, the same competition recognized it in the Concept category. Designed in collaboration with Angela Silver and AtkinsRéalis, the plaza was inaugurated in May 2025 and has since become a place Montrealers make their own every day. Built over the Ville-Marie Expressway, it mends an urban rift between Old Montreal and downtown. Its meadow brings together 21 perennial species that bloom through the seasons, each one a tribute to a woman who left her mark on the city’s history.

The Montreal Irish Monument Memorial Site extends this idea of memory inscribed in the landscape. Set around the Black Rock, it honours the 6,000 Irish immigrants who died in 1847. The project transforms a long-neglected site into a gateway to the city that is open to all.

These two projects share a conviction: a public space can carry a community’s memory while enriching its everyday life.
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to these projects and to this international recognition!
