Two shared spaces where city life comes alive
To enter, move through and come together: the collective life of a city unfolds in its shared spaces. In Montréal, two such places have been recognized at the 2026 Architecture MasterPrize, an international program that celebrates excellence in architecture, interior design and landscape architecture each year.
The Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal Welcome Pavilion won in the Heritage Architecture category, while Place des Montréalaises received the award for Large Scale Landscape Projects.
A National Historic Site and one of Québec’s most visited destinations, the Oratory welcomes more than two million pilgrims and visitors each year. Built into the slope of Mount Royal, the new welcome pavilion marks the beginning of the ascent toward the basilica while making the journey accessible to all. LEED Silver certified, the pavilion engages thoughtfully with a monument of immense spiritual and historical significance, without seeking to overshadow it.

In the heart of the city, Place des Montréalaises, designed in collaboration with Angela Silver and AtkinsRéalis, extends over the Ville-Marie Expressway, creating a universally accessible pedestrian connection between Champ-de-Mars metro station and the area surrounding City Hall. Both a lookout and a gathering place, Place des Montréalaises was also recognized by the Architecture MasterPrize in 2020, at the concept stage.

Congratulations to the teams, partners and collaborators who helped bring these two projects to life!
